GUSHUE TO DEFEND TITLE

    Reigning champion Team Brad Gushue will kick off the 2015 Masters, running Oct. 27 to Nov. 1 in Truro, N.S. The full match schedule for the second event of the 2015-16 Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling season was released this week  and Gushue’s rink is set to face Toronto’s Team John Epping in the opening draw. The Masters features a powerhouse lineup with the top 13 men’s teams and top 13 women’s teams ranked on the World Curling Tour’s total order of merit plus Tour Challenge Tier 2 winners.   The St. John’s Ice Caps get a spit of their home series with Binghamton Senators as they scored three first period goals and then hung on for a 3-2 win. Goaltender Zach Fucale in goal gets the win stopping 38 of 40 shots fired his way. Darren Dietz gave the Ice Caps a 1-nothing lead with the opening goal at 1:37 of the first period.   The Northeast Eagles scored five third period goals and go on to beat the defending champions Southern Shore Breakers 9-4 in Avalon East Senior Hockey league play Wednesday night at the Jack Byrne Arena in Torbay.   The Binghamton Senators end the St. John’s Ice Caps home winning streak at two games as they come-from-behind with a goal in overtime to beat the Ice Caps 5-4 before 55 hundred and 15 fans at Mile One Center. Fredrik Clasesson gets the overtime at 1:35. Travis Ewanyk forced the game into the extra session with his goal at 16:53 of the third period.   Two people will be inducted into the Mount Pearl Soccer Hall of Fame on November 7th Jennifer Andrews played at the Intercollegiate level with Acadia University for four years. She was also an All-Canadian all-star.     Jennifer had great success in soccer from an early age, winning provincial championships every year from 1987 at the under 12 division up to 1993 at the under 18 division.   Dan Cleary has ended his holdout and has reported to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League. Cleary was placed on waivers earlier this month and then was assigned to the A-H-L team. He did not appear with the team at first but was at the teams practice on Tuesday.
