When Does SSNL Stop Talking and Start Changing? ST. JOHN’S, NL – Over the past several years, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing some truly special moments in high school sports across Newfoundland and Labrador. From softball diamonds to soccer pitches, from basketball courts to volleyball gyms, I’ve seen firsthand the passion, dedication, and pride that student-athletes bring to their schools and communities. But somewhere along the way, that admiration has been replaced by frustration. Because the more I’ve watched, the more I’ve listened, to athletes, coaches, and parents alike, the clearer it has become, the system isn’t working. The…
TWILLINGATE, NL – 2026 marked the culmination of a remarkable journey for the Saint Joseph’s Jaguars. For most of its history, Saint Joseph’s had never been known as a basketball powerhouse. That all changed in 2025, when, for the first time in school history, the Jaguars hosted and won the Provincial 1A Boys Basketball Championship in nothing short of storybook fashion. Trailing by 15 points, they stormed back to claim a dramatic two-point victory and make history. What made that championship run even more special was that the team lost no players afterward. At a school with only around twenty…

By Jason Pike Is This What Growth Looks Like? A Hard Look at Holy Cross and the Future of Senior Men’s Soccer in Newfoundland One thing we constantly preach here in Newfoundland is development — in every sport we play. We talk about giving players every opportunity to grow and improve, and soccer is no exception. Over the last decade, clubs across the island have pushed hard to align themselves with professional outfits both overseas and at home, organizing travel trips to higher-level competitions in an effort to raise the standard of play. Anyone involved in sport in this province…

By Jason Pike. Year after year, it becomes increasingly obvious that provincial teams representing Newfoundland and Labrador—particularly under the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association (NLSA)—are not putting forward the best possible product. And perhaps they never will, at least not under the current system. Because let’s be honest: the teams selected to represent our province in soccer don’t truly represent the province at all. If anything, the organization might as well be renamed the Avalon Peninsula Soccer Association, because if you’re not from St. John’s or its immediate surroundings, your chances of making a provincial team are slim to none.…

ST JOHN’S, NL – We’re now into the month of April and all traces of winter have begin to subside and with that comes the onslaught of outdoor sports for spring and summer season. This week the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association (NLSA) announced its list of teams and categories for the upcoming 2025 season. Everything was pretty much business as usual except for one! The division that is, arguably, considered the crown jewel of men’s soccer is the problem as I see it. The once dominant Challenge Cup League posted many different mixtures of teams throughout the years with…

ST. JOSEPH’S, NL – The 2025 School Sports NL 1A boys basketball championship kicked off with the St Joseph’s Academy Jaguars taking on the Eric G Lambert School out of Churchill Falls Labrador. The Churchill Falls team were big in stature and physically athletic. I guess that has a bit to do with most of them being hockey players. Go to athletes nonetheless but in front of the hometown crowd in a packed gymnasium the air was nothing less than electric and hometown St Joseph’s plugged into that and it was smooth sailing all the way. As big and athletic…

SSNL Basketball needs rankings changes By Jason Pike Gross, disgusting and wrong are a few terms that come to mind as my jaw dropped reading the schedule for the SSNL Regional 1A qualifiers for the Avalon District this upcoming weekend. The tournament consists of 4 teams. Dunne Memorial, St. Catherine’s, Baltimore, and St. Bons. First, I have never agreed with St Bons being allowed to enter into the small school tournaments as they are not a part of NL schools and even more so, they are private school with the ability, if they chose, to create a super team. They…

The former Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League’s Acadie-Bathurst Titan is to be relocated to St. John’s for the 2025-26 season and with a new name. In a news conference on Thursday the team announced that they will be called the Newfoundland Regiment in a tribute to the province’s military history and the famous Royal Newfoundland Regiment. Obviously the team has gotten the buy in from the Canadian Armed Forces and the Royal Newfoundland Regiment but the use of that name is bound to get some push…
By Jason Pike, Reporter The Sports Page NL Over the last few days, I’ve pondered and struggled wondering if I should even respond to or even acknowledge the actions of certain individuals and their response to recent articles. Some an angry display on our Facebook page. As someone who grew up Gen X and grew up in what some arguably consider the last great generation of the 90s, things were different. If you had problems, you settled them one-on-one. If you were offended by something you shut your mouth and agreed to disagree instead of creating a cancel culture…

Provincial Boys Slow Pitch Softball Championships Highlight Need for Change This past weekend saw the Provincial Boys Slow Pitch Softball Championships, with 2A through 4A tournaments held across the province. 2A Championship – La Scie La Scie hosted the 2A event, welcoming eight teams from across Newfoundland. Noticeably absent were representatives from the Burin Peninsula—an absence attributed partly to distance but more so to an emerging formula of competitiveness versus travel. The disparity in skill levels among schools once again raised questions about the need to reintroduce a 1A division for slow pitch, or perhaps to revisit the former Fair…
