Medallist and the Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games. “Grassroots need to be fostered” By Jason Pike St John’s, NL – I find myself in a lot of gymnasiums over the course of a year whether it be basketball or soccer and in the past a lot of softball and baseball. Its ofeten the same face kids in school play on multiple teams. Inevitable, as children age they let some sports go as the choose to focus on their dominant or preferred sport. It’s a fact of life and often to the disappointment, and sometimes ire of some parents, who…
By Greg Locke ST JOHN’S, NL – St John’s is getting another semi-pro hockey. The former Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League’s Acadie-Bathurst Titan is to be relocated to St. John’s for the 2025-26 season and with a new name. In a news conference on Thursday the team announced that they will be called the Newfoundland Regiment in a tribute to the province’s military history and the famous Royal Newfoundland Regiment. Obviously the team has gotten the buy in from the Canadian Armed Forces and the Royal Newfoundland Regiment but the use of that name is bound to get some push…
By Jason Pike, Reporter The Sports Page NL Over the last few days, I’ve pondered and struggled wondering if I should even respond to or even acknowledge the actions of certain individuals and their response to recent articles. Some an angry display on our Facebook page. As someone who grew up Gen X and grew up in what some arguably consider the last great generation of the 90s, things were different. If you had problems, you settled them one-on-one. If you were offended by something you shut your mouth and agreed to disagree instead of creating a cancel culture…
By Jason Pike St Mary’s, NL – The annual Dunne Memorial Basketball Tournament opened last weekend in St Mary’s Newfoundland playing host to five teams. Dunne Memorial Academy, Christ The King Rushoon, Baltimore High School, St Kevin’s High and St Joseph’s Academy in Lameline. The opening contest proved to be one for the ages as the Dunne Memorial Academy Vikings took on the St Joseph’s Academy Jaguars from Lamaline on the Burin peninsula. It was a hard-fought battle, literally back and forth the entire game, never within more than eight points in either direction. With Lamaline in the Lead in…

ST JOHN’S, NL – The 2024 Grand Slam of Curling wrapped up in St John’s over the weekend and home town favourite Brad Gushue and his team didn’t not make the cut. He lost to Brad Jacobs in the Quarter Finals and failed to advance to the semi-finals. Billed as the “Battle of the Brads” between superstar skips Brad Jacobs and Brad Gushue in the series, but the intensity had never been amped up to this level even when they met in…
