NATIONAL SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIPS RETURN

  Canada’s two senior soccer competitions – the men’s Challenge Trophy and women’s Jubilee Trophy – will return to St. John’s, Newfoundland Labrador in October 5 to 10, 2016. The two Sport Chek National Championship competitions return to Canada’s most eastern city for the first time since 2008.   The Sport Chek National Championships are Canada’s premier amateur soccer competitions, with provincial and territory winners pitted against each other at the senior and youth levels on the national stage. Next year will mark the 94th edition of the senior men’s competition and 35th edition of the senior women’s competition.  …

The Montreal Canadiens have sent goalie Eddie Pasquale back to the East Coast Hockey League to play with Brampton Beast. Pasquale made 45 saves in the IceCaps win over the Albany Devils on Wednesday night. He has a 4-1-2 record with the Ice Caps and a 2.23 goals against average.…

The rumours persist that former Newfoundland NHL star Michael Ryder will be playing with the Clarenville Caribous after the Christmas break in the Central West Senior Hockey League. Ryder had played last season with the New Jersey Devils and has not played this season. The Bonavista Native has returned home.   Ivan Hapgood is the General Manager of the Clarenville Caribous. OLD ARENA TO BE DEMOLISHED

The old Mount Pearl Hockey Arena known to residents as the Tin Can will be torn down. Council made the announcement Tuesday when it presented it’s budget. The building which is located off Smallwood Drive in the Gushue Sports Complex is seen as unusable. It had been transformed many years ago to an indoor soccer facility. Its expected tenders for the demolition will be called in the spring. Mount Pearl does have two ice surfaces at the Glacier.…

Team Bill Jenkins sits atop the Bally Haly Super Curling League with a 7-1 record following a 6-0 win over Noah Hillier-Boston Pizza/Asham on Tuesday night. Toby McDonald and Greg Smith remain tied for second place with 6-2 records thanks to wins on Tuesday as well. McDonald defeated Gary Perry GFL Environmental 7-5 while Smith and his North Atlantic squad downed  Ken Bavis Technip 7-3.
