S U N D A Y    The standings remain close in the Central West Senior Hockey League following weekend play. The Gander Flyers get a split with Clarenville getting a 10-3 win Sunday. Andrew Ryan, Ray Dalton and Jordan Kelly fire two goals each for the winners. Jordan Escott, Alex Gill, Mitch Oke and Wes Welcher added singles. Mason Reid, Andrew Sweetland and Ken Mahoney replied for the Cataracts. The Corner Brook Royals get a split with the Cataracts winning 4-1 Sunday.   John Epping made some incredible shots ans won the Canadian Open Curling championship beating defending champion Brad Gushue 7-4 in the championship game. PARFREY GETS MAJOR POSTING

The man who has promoted rugby in Newfoundland and Labrador for a long time has been rewarded for his dedication to the sport. Pat Parfrey has been named to the World Rugby Council. He will be the Canadian representative on the Council. Parfrey started playing rugby at age 13 at the CBC in his native Cork. He played his club rugby for University College Cork R.F.C., London Irish, Montreal Irish and Swilers RFC. Between 1970-77 he played in all of Munster’s games, including the game when Munster drew 3-3 with the New Zealand All-Blacks in 1973; he also won a cap for Ireland as a wing against them…

The St. John’s Maple Leafs increased their first place lead in major midget hockey as they downed the St. John’s Privateers 5-1. James Locke, Dylan MacKenzie, Cody Langmead, Curtis Heffernan and Tyler Planetta shared in the scoring. Adam Nolan scored for the Privateers. MacKenzie Janes in nets for the Leafs made 29 saves.  Jordan Yamrechuk made 25 saves in nets for the Privateers.       MONDAY     St. John’s Caps defeated Southern Shore Breakers 9-5 in action Monday as they grabbed a 2-nothing first period lead and held a commanding 6-2 lead after 40 minutes of play.   The Gander Flyers in the Central West Senior Hockey League have signed three players. Mitch Oake who played with Clarenville was obtained in a trade with the Caribous. The Flyers also have signed defenseman Nick Theriault  He has played with the Cataracts and CeeBee Stars And the Flyers also have signed former St Johns Fog Devils forward Wes Welcher.
