Greg Smith and his Caribous Curling rink of lead Craig Laing, second Kyle Barron and third McNeil Lamswood have won the provincial under 21 men’s curling championship. After going 4-2 in the regular schedule, Smith scored a single point in an extra end and edged Stephen Trickett of the St. John’s Curling Club 7-6 to earn a trip to the Nationals.                …

Bell Island Blues moved into third place in the Avalon East Senior Hockey League standings Sunday with a 5-2 win over Southern Shore Breakers. The Blues now lead the Breakers by one point in the standings with a game in hand. Tyler Adams was the offensive leader for the Blues with three goals. Single markers were added by Brandon Burry and Chad Sullivan. Shane Boland, Daniel Dalton and Mike Vaters scored for the Shore.   The St. John’s Ice Caps finish their road trip with a 3-1 decision over Utica Comets . The Ice Caps were up 2-1 after the first and shut down Utica the rest of the way while adding a goal themselves for the decision. Lucas Lessio Brandon McNally and Jeremy Gregoire scored the Ice Caps goals in this contest. Gregorie had the winner at 4:42 of the opening period.   The Roebothan, McKay and Marshall Avalon Junior Capitals scored three unanswered third period goals enroute to a come-from-behind 6-4 victory over the C-B-N Stars in junior hockey action Saturday at Goulds Arena. The Capitals with the win move into a tie for second place in the standings with C-B-R Renegades as both teams now have 22 points but the Renegades have three games in hand. ICECAPS LOSE IN SHOOTOUT

Gabriel Dumont netted a shorthanded goal while Charles Hudon scored a powerplay marker but not enough as the St. John’s IceCaps fell 3-2 to the Rochester Americans in a shootout Wednesday night. The IceCaps fell behind 1-0 after the first period but Dumont tied the game just 22 seconds into the second period with the IceCaps on the penalty kill. Rochester regained the lead just a minute and 20 seconds later before Hudon squared the contest at two with a man advantage at 16:31 of the second. The third period and overtime were scoreless.
