The Clarenville Caribous have announced they have appointed the first female senior hockey league coach. Rebecca Russell, who has been an assistant coach with the team, was named the head coach Tuesday by General Manager Ivan Hapgood. Russell takes over from Hapgood who was bench coach after it was decided that coach Dustin Russell would return as a full time player with the Caribous. Russell will be head coach with the Caribous when they face Gander Flyers this weekend in Gander.…

The scoring race in the Central West Senior Hockey League remains tight with all teams having played 18 games so far in the season. Corner Brook Royals forward Brandon Hynes continues to lead the scoring. He has 30 points from 18 goals and 12 assists. Cam Fergus of the Cataracts is in second place one point behind Hynes.   John Madden scored 23 points as his Swilers team get by George Street Beer Market 76-69 in Metro Basketball play on Friday night in the 24th annual Margaret Breen Memorial Basketball Tournament. Mike Procencher had 14 points. Dave Banfield swished 25 points for the losers. In game two Fougere Menchenton Architces downed ACW Law 55-47. Make it four losses in a row for the Ice Caps against the Wilkes Barre Scranton Penguins. The home town team lost 6-4 at Mile One before 5056 fans. They have also lost their first four home games in 2016 and have one win in their last five games. The Ice Caps had a 3-2 lead after the first period and the game was tied 4-all going to the third.
