A Mount Pearl native has been named the Atlantic universities Male Athlete of the week. Gavin Dyke, who is attending Dalhousie University wins the award for his swimming performance . Dyke was named the Swimmer of the Meet at the AUS Men’s Swimming Championship held this past weekend at Dalhousie. He led the Tigers to their 18th consecutive AUS swimming championship title. Dyke collected seven gold medals this weekend including wins in all three freestyle events (50m, 100m & 200m) and the 100m butterfly.   The Clarenville Caribous have been dealt a serious blow to their playoff run in the Central West Senior Hockey League. Defenseman Franklyn MacDonald has signed to play hockey with GMB Nottingham Panthers for the rest of the current season.The Panthers are hoping to have him in the lineujp as soon as possible. The American Hockey League says that St. John’s IceCaps goaltender Zach Fucale has been selected as the American Hockey League player of the week for the period ending Feb. 14. Fucale won each of his three starts last week while stopping 107 of 111 shots, good for a 1.32 goals-against average and a .964 save percentage. St. John’s was outshot by a combined total of 111-60 in Fucale’s three outings but put together its first three-game winning streak of the season thanks to the rookie goaltender’s efforts.
