The Newfoundland Growlers opened their preseason with a 5-2 victory over the Brampton Beast scoring 3 goals in the opening 20 minutes of action. Goals came from Todd Skirving, newcomer Riley Woods and St. John’s Native Marcus Power. Brady Ferguson put the Growlers ahead by 4 heading into the final period of action. Scott Pooley on the empty Brampton net to seal a 5-2 Growlers victory over the Beast in the first of two preseason games against the Beast. The teams meet each other for a rematch Saturday night at the Earnscliffe Recreation Centre in Brampton.…

Mount Pearl native Darryl Williams appears that he will be back with the ECHL champion Newfoundland Growlers as an assistant coach. He spent  spent a decade as an NHL assistant coach with the Vancouver Canucks and New York Rangers.The parent Toronto Maple Leafs, who make such revelations, haven’t officially announced Williams as a full-time hire, but his presence in Mississauga means that should happen soon. The Growlers will be playing two exhibition games Friday and Saturday in Brampton against the Beast. Friday’s game has a 9:30 p.m.island time  start time, while Saturday’s puck drop is at 6:30 p.m. island time.…

    One of the promising players in the Toronto Maple Leafs organization has been assigned to the Newfoundland Growlers of the ECHL. Justin Brazeau was sent down to the Marlies in the AHL and then reassigned to the Growlers He had one goal and one assist in a game against the Rochester Americans on Sunday.…
