SENIOR HOCKEY IN PROVINCE STILL UP IN THE AIR

Hockey Canada  has not handed down it’s ruling as to whether the East Coast Senior Hockey League can operate a league this season. The league has appealed a Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador decision not to allow the league to be sanctioned because they refuse the entry of the Conception Bay CeeBee Stars into the league. Northeast Eagles picked up their fourth win in St. John’s Junior Hockey Saturday beating St. John’s Caps 6-4. Ryan Ricketts led the winners with Max French adding a pair and Cameron Sullivan a single. In another game Roebothan, McKay and Marshall Avalon Capitals blanked Trinity Placentia Flyers 2-0. Zach Putt finished first in the annual Cape to Cabot road race Sunday. He finished the course in 1:16.47. Jennifer Murrin was the first female and second overall finisher in 1:19.32. Mark Richards was the second male in 1:24.49 and James Cadigan third in 1:25.28. Stephanie Nevin was the second female finisher in 1:29.57 and Janelle Simmons was third in the female category in 1:32.40. 448 people finished this grewling event which goes from Cape Spear to Cabot Tower. …

The Toronto Marlies have recalled forward Zach O’Brien from the Newfoundland Growlers. The 27-year-old St. John’s, NL native has two goals and two assists and two  penalty minutes in four games with Growlers so far this season. M E A N W H I L E  The Toronto Marlies have assigned defenceman Alex Gudbranson to the Newfoundland Growlers. The 25-year-old has been sidelined with an injury during the Toronto Maple Leafs Training Camp, held in Paradise.He appeared in 55 regular-season games with the Growlers last season scoring two goals and six assists and 29 penalty minutes along the way.   …

ESTEPHAN SCORES TWICE IN GROWLERS WIN

It was a night of celebration at Mile One on Friday night. The 2018-19 Kelly Cup champions the Newfoundland Growlers received their championship rings. And the Growlers capped the night off with a 5-2 win over the Brampton Beast before 5024 fans at Mile One. Giorgio Estephan scored twice for the Growlers who were up 2-1 after 20 minutes. Brady Feruson, Colt Conrad, and Scott Pooley added singles. Maksim Zhukov made 21 saves in getting the win between the pipes.
