MUN WOMEN, MEN GET A SPLIT WITH CAPE BRETON

  S U N D A Y Memorial women’s basketball team got a split of their weekend series with Cape Breton winning 74-58 in Sunday. Hallie Nickerson led MUN with 32 points and Alana Short added 12. They now have ten wins and four losses on the season.   The men’s team gets a weekend split against Cape Breton but also end a five game losing streak with an 82-69 win Sunday. GROWLERS GO 1-2 ON ROAD TRIP

    S U N D A Y The Growlers lost 7-6 in a shootout Sunday to Brampton Beast. The Beast grabbed a 3-1 lead after the first period and the teams were tied 4-all heading to the final frame and the teams exchanged goals to force the shootout. Evan Neugold, Marcus Power, Aaron Luchuk, Joseoh Duszak, Justin Brazeau and Garrett Johnston had the Growler goals. CLANCEY INDUCTED INTO ECHL HALL OF FAME

  St. John’s native Derek Clancey is now a member of the East Coast Hockey League Hall of Fame. He played his final season in the ECHL in 98-99 and has been a coach with the team and moved on to the NHL with the Pittsburgh Penguins where he has won two Stanley Cups. He joins Darren Colbourne of Corner Brook in the hall as Colbourne was inducted in 2015. …

JACK REARDIGAN PASSES AWAY

  The Sporting Community in Newfoundland is mourning the loss of a great athlete and sports executive. 97 year old Jack Reardigan passed away Wednesday. He is a member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame. Reardigan was also president of the Royal St. John’s Regatta Committee and is an honourary member of the Regatta Committee. He was also a hockey official in the province for many years.  He also played in 12 Boyle Trophy Championship teams with St. Bon’s between 1944 and 1956. …

A Newfoundlander from Torbay has struck gold at the World Youth Olympic Games. 18 year old Nathan Young teamed up with Laura Nagy of Hungary to claim the gold medal in the mixed doubles curling event. They combined to beat a team from Russia 9-5 to take the gold medal. …

ROYALS DEFEAT MARINERS

  The Corner Brook Royals scored three first period goals added singles in second and third frames and defeated Port aux Basques Mariners 5-3 on Friday night. Nick Childs, Ryan Roche, William Keating, Josh Smith and Wilfred Bellows scored for the Royals. Robert Parsons and Darren Dean replied for the Mariners. With the win the Royals have a 3-3-1 record on the season and the Mariners fall to 0-6. Deer Lake who hist Port aux Basques Saturday night are winless in six games.  …
