Alex Faulkner dies at age 88.

May 1936 – April 2025 ST. JOHN’S, NL – Newfoundland and Labrador hockey legend,  Alex Faulkner has died at age 88. A native of Bishop’s Falls in central Newfoundland, Faulkner is considered one of the greatest players in provincial hockey history and the first Newfoundlander to play in the NHL. He played in the NHL from 1961 to 1964 with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings. The rest of his career, which lasted from 1952 to 1976, was mainly spent in the Newfoundland Senior Hockey League. He also has a bronze medal from the 1966 World Hockey championships. …

Deer Lake Red Wings win 2025 Herder

CLARENVILLE, NL – The Deer Lake Red Wings defeated the Clarenville Ford Caribous by a score of 4 to 1 on Saturday night to sweep the 2025 Herder Memorial Championship series in four straight games. It is their first championship win since 2005. Red Wings goalie Bryan Gillis was the winner of the Cliff Gorman Memorial Award for MVP of the series. DEER LAKE, NL – Newfoundland’s legendary Herder Memorial Trophy is on the line again for 2025 as the Newfoundland senior hockey season comes to an end. The finals will see the Deer Lake Red Wings of the Central West Senior Hockey League (CWSHL) in their third consecutive Herder final face the Clarenville Ford Caribous, who represent the Avalon East Senior Hockey League (AESHL) . ST. JOSEPH’S, NL – The 2025 School Sports NL 1A boys basketball championship kicked off with the St Joseph’s Academy Jaguars taking on the Eric G Lambert School out of Churchill Falls Labrador. The Churchill Falls team were big in stature and physically athletic.
