          Well known St. John’s Baseball player and Umpire passed away suddenly on Friday morning in St. John’s.   Steve Phillips was a baseball umpire for many years. He was also a seller baseball player and a renowned baseball coach. he had a way of getting the best out of his players and coached St. John’s to their fifth consecutive provincial crown under his coaching.   Steve is survived by his wife Anne, sons Peter, Daniel and Elliott and daughter Gillian.…

CORNER BROOK BASEBALL SEMIS

  Upset in the opening game of the Corner Brook senior baseball best of five semi-final series Thursday night at Jubilee Field. The fourth place Monarchs edged the first place Hawks 5-4 in a game that took eight innings to complete. The finish was dramatic as Steve Shephard slammed a solo home run to give the win to the monarchs. Michael Tavenor gets the win in this game. He went the distance allowed six hits, walked two and registered ten strikeouts. Veteran Frank Humber is tagged with the loss. He went the distance as well allowing nine hits no walks…

      Bob Kent goes five and two thirds innings for the win as Shamrocks defeat Knights 8-2 in senior baseball play. Kent walked two and fanned four. Kirk Fleming came on in relief. Tyler Holwell takes the loss. He went four innings had one strikeout and issued three free passes.   Feildians blanked Storm 5-nothing in the second game of the  night.   Redmond Hunt had a perfect three for three performance at the plate leading Shamrocks to a 7-4 win over Feildians in Intermediate play Wednesday night. Ryan Dooley gets the win. he tossed six innings allowing fourhits, walked four and fanned three. Matt Murphy gets the save. Heather Healey takes the loss. She went four and a third innings gave up nine hits walked one and fanned two. James Lock came on in relief. In another game Gonzaga defeated Knights 6-2. Challenge Cup/Soccer

  The regular season in Challenge Cup Soccer is over and it sees C-B-S get its first and only point of the season. C-B-S and Feildians played to a scoreless draw. D’Arcy Bennett in goal for C-B-S and Chris Goodridge in the net for Feildians. So Holy Cross are first, St. Lawrence second  Mount Pearl third and Feildians fourth. That’s the teams that qualify now for the playoffs. So the playoffs will be held in Mount pearl September 4th to 6th. Sept 4th at six Holy Cross meet St. Lawrence and at 8:30 its Mount Pearl and Feildians.    …

BROWN AN ICECAP

      The Montreal Canadiens have signed defense man Travis Brown to a one year two way contract. Brown was originally drafted by Chicago. He has played the past four seasons with Moose Jaw Warriors and Victoria Royals of the Western Hockey League. He is expected to start the season with the St. John’s Ice Caps. Last season the 21 year old had 18 goals and 57 points in 71 games.      …
