Holy Cross defeated Mount Pearl 3-1 to claim the provincial Masters A Soccer title. Shane Antle, Jay Babstock and Jim Fleming did the scoring for Holy Cross. Warren Norris replied for the Mount Pearl  squad. Karl Reddy was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Cooper Heating/Dewalt won the B championship edging CBS 3-2 on penalty kicks. The teams were tied after regulation. In regulation time Lorand Acatlynch and Gary Walsh netted the goals while Keith Rideout and Dion Brushett replied for CBS.   The St. John’s Maple Leaf Midgets came up with an 10-6 win over  Central Ice Pak  as the provincial Major Midget Hockey season started Saturday. Dylan Guy, Tyler Wall and Danny Rice scored two goals each for the winners. Tison Ryan, Nick French, Cody Langmead and Kyle McGrath get the goals for the Leafs. Game on Gear has evened their St. John’s Intermediate Softball quarter-final series with Bay Roberts Coors Light at a game apiece. Game on Gear came away with a 5-4 extra inning victory on Friday night. Here is how the winning run was scored. Aces have advanced to the finals of the Corner Brook senior baseball setup. The Aces scored six runs in the sixth inning and go on to a 7-1 win over Marlins and take the best of five series in straight games.   They now await the winner of the Monarchs Hawks series which the Monarchs lead two games to one.
