NATIONAL CHALLENGE CUP SOCCER

    The Newfoundland teams competing in National Soccer championships are now in Calgary. Holy Cross will be representing this province in the men’s Challenge Cup Competition which starts on Wednesday but they will not play their first game until Thursday against Alberta’s B team at 9:30 island time.   The St. John’s Ice Caps released four players Sunday following their completion of pre season games against the Toronto Marlies. Released are Calin Wild, Travis Brown, Jamid Watson and Ben Goss. The Ice Caps, the farm team of the Montreal Canadiens, open their season on the road Saturday when they play in Hartford. They play game two of the weekend Saturday in Bridgeport. They open their home season October 16th against Rochester.   The Ice Caps won the Coleman Cup, the pre-season exhibition season against the Toronto Marlies. GUSHUE WINS AGAIN

  Newfoundland’s Team Gushue captured another World Curling Tour championship Sunday in Basel,Switzerland with a 7-2 victory over the Netherlands Team van Dorp in the final game. After losing their first game, Team Gushue racked up 8 straight victories to claim their 4th Swiss Cup title since 2006.
