FUCALE GETS FIRST CAREER SHUTOUT

  Zach Fucale gets his first professional hockey career shutout and the first shutout of the season by the IceCaps as they blank the Syracuse Crunch 4-nothing at Mile One. Fucale made 36 saves in this game as the Crunch outshot the Ice Caps 36-20.   Nikita Scherbak scored what proved to the the game winning goal at 9:45 of the first period on the power play.   The Jeff Thomas rink of lead Ross Young, second Peter Hollett and third Mark Noseworthy won the provincial senior men’s championship Sunday. Thomas defeated Glen Goss 7-2 Sunday in the deciding game. Saturday Thomas defeated Goss 7-3 to force the deciding game Sunday. Thomas and his rink will represent Newfoundland and Labrador at the National championships in Digby Nova Scotia in late March.   Cathy Cunningham and her rink of Diane Roberts, Heather Martin and Patricia Tiller won the provincial senior ladies curling championship Friday defeating Laura Phillips in the best of five series in straight games. He won the regular season scoring championship and league most valuable player award. Now after just two games in the playoffs Cam Fergus of the Cataracts is the leading scorer once again. In the two games the Cataracts have played Fergus has three goals and four assists for seven points.   There has been a trade in the N-H-L and two Newfoundland natives are involved. First the trade. The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded veteran defenceman and captain Dion Phaneuf to the Ottawa Senators in a nine player deal. Along with Phaneuf, the Leafs send forwards Matt Frattin, Casey Bailey, Ryan Rupert and defence prospect Cody Donaghey to the Senators in exchange for defenceman Jared Cowen, forwards Colin Greening, Milan Michalek and Tobias Lindberg as well as Ottawa’s second-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft. Cam Fergus of the first place Grand Falls Windsor Cataracts was a double award winner as the Central West Senior Hockey League announced its regular season award winners Sunday. Fergus was named the league’s Most Valuable Player for the Regular season. He also won the league’s individual scoring championship. Fergus played 19 of his teams 22 games this season. He scored 23 goals and added 24 assists for 37 points and the scoring title. Luke Gallant also of the Cataracts was named the league’s top defenceman.
