GUSHUE WINS 5TH GS TITLE

  Brad Gushue won the Elite 10 title on a draw-to-the-button shootout Sunday to earn his fifth career Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling title. The team of Gushue, third Mark Nichols, second Brett Gallant and lead Geoff Walker have had an incredible run in the Pinty’s event. In the final game Gushue’s team curled 77 per cent. Gushue himself curled just 70 percent. Lead Geoff Walker was the top performer per centage wise as he curled 88 per cent. Next up is the Players Championship set for Toronto April 12th to `17th.…

Two Grand Falls Windsor Cataracts were recipients of provincial senior hockey league individual awards as the 2016 Herder final started Saturday Night. The Central/ West Senior Hockey League scorer was named the most valuable player in provincial senior hockey for the season. Cam Fergus who was also named the senior league MVP also takes home the Gus Soper Memorial |Memorial Trophy as the provincial MVP. The top goaltender award for the third consecutive time goes to the Cataracts goaltender A J Whiffen. He had a 2.71 goals against average and a save percentage of .900. …

  The St. John’s Maple Leafs have made it back to back provincial Major Midget AAA Hockey titles.   The Maple Leafs defeated the Western Kings 4-1 Saturday night to win the best of seven final series four games to two.   Danny Rice, Tim Noble, Cody Langmead and Tyler Planetta scored for the Maple Leafs in the championship game.   George Young had the goal for the Kings.   Kyle McGrath of the Maple Leafs was named the series Most Valuable Player.   The Maple Leafs will represent the province at the Atlantic championships set for the new stadium…

      The St. John’s Caps and Grand Falls Windsor Cataracts will meet for the 2016 provincial senior hockey championship and the Herder Memorial Trophy. The Caps earned a finals berth with a 4-2 win over the Northeast Eagles in game seven of the final Avalon East final Tuesday night. The Caps won the first two games of the series. The Eagles came back and won the next three. The Caps then won game six and forced the game seven which they won.       S U N D A Y  The Cataracts are one win away from the Central West Senior Hockey League championship and a berth in the 2016 Herder Memorial Trophy final. They defeated the Corner Brook Royals 5-2 in game four . Cam Fergus  and Brandon Bussey with two goals each for the Cataracts and Steve Yetman with a singles.
