  Dave Freake won the Mundy Pond 5 K road race Sunday. He cross the finish line in a time of 15 minutes and 37 seconds. Matthew Power placed second in 16 minutes and 38 seconds. There was a tie for third place between Charlie Kourvelas and Mark Greene both with a time of 16 minutes and 43 seconds. Anne Johnston was the first female finishes times in 17:23 which was good also for tenth place overall. Caroline Mcillroy was the second female finisher.     The Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association (NLSA) is getting ready for a busy summer season with action to start in May in provincial league play, and Challenge Cup and Jubilee Trophy action.  The group held its annual Spring Planning Meeting (SPM) April 8-9 in St. John’s with approximately 40 delegates in attendance from clubs and teams from around the province and St.Pierre-Miquelon.   The Avalon East Senior Hockey League handed out its awards for the past season. League top scorer Chris Sparkes of the Northeast Eagles was named the league’s most valuable player for the season. Brad Yetman of the Eagles was named coach of the year. Dylan Sheldon of Southern Shore was named top defenseman, Chris Mooney of northeast took home the most gentlemanly and effective player award.   The Carolina Hurricanes have signed their  2014 fifth-round pick St. John’s native Clark Bishop to a three-year entry-level contract. Bishop, the captain of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s  Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, went 127th overall in 2014.   He has spent the last four years in the QMJHL, playing in 202 games for the Screaming Eagles, and putting up 57 goals and 72 assists for 129 points.
