Newfoundland’s two women’s teams finished sixth and eighth at the National Jubilee Competition which concluded on Monday. Halifax edged Holy Cross 3-2 on penalty kicks to finish fifth and Holy Cross sixth. Saskatchewan nipped Kirby United 2-1 also on penalty kicks. Kirby United placed eighth. The Royal Selects of Beauport Quebec claimed the gold. On the men’ s side Edmonton Green and Gold doubled St Lawrence Laurentians 2-1 . The Laurentians finished sixth. DANNY CLEARY RELEASED BY WINGS

Daniel Cleary’s run with the Detroit Red Wings appears to be over, as the team announced Saturday the veteran winger has been released. The 37-year-old was invited to Red Wings’ camp on a professional tryout. Cleary, who last appeared in the NHL in 2014-15, will join the training camp of the Grand Rapids Griffins, the Red Wings’ AHL affiliate. Cleary played 35 games with the Griffins last season, recording three goals and 12 assists. The 1997 first-round pick by the Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup with Detroit in 2008.  …

  He has celebrated Herder Memorial Trophy wins with the Grand Falls Cataracts, but A J Whiffen will not return to the Cats for the 2016-17 season. There had ben tension between Whiffen and the Cataracts especially with the way he was treated at last years Allan Cup play downs.
