ENGLISH, DUNLAP WIN BASKETBALL AWARDS

    The National Basketball League of Canada named its award winners for the regular season on Friday.   St. John’s Edge player and Patricks Cove Native Carl English came away with two league awards.   English was named the Most Valuable Player in the League and he was also named the Canadian Player of the Year.     The Executive of the year was Jeff Dunlap also of he St. John’s Edge.     The Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association celebrated the best of 2017 Friday night, handing out team and individual awards, and inducting six new members into the NL Soccer Hall of Fame.  The class of 2017 includes Rob Antle, Laura Breen, Rod Drake, Alec Noseworthy, Craig Edwards and Colin Edwards   Jessie Noseworthy and Alex Pretty took home awards for senior female and male, while Jacob Grant and Sydney Walsh were honoured on the junior side. CLARENVILLE HERDER MEMORIAL CHAMPIONS

        The Clarenville Caribous are the 2018 Newfoundland and Labrador Senior Hockey champions and winners of the Herder Memorial Trophy.   The Caribous claimed their fourth title and first since 2012 as they swept the St John’s Caps in straight games in the best of seven series.   They completed the sweep Saturday night with a 6-1 decision over the Caps at the Jack Byrne arena.
