Two Newfoundland Growlers team have been named to the 2019-20 East Coast Hockey League rookie all-star team. Joseph Duszak of the Newfoundland Growlers finished second among rookie defensemen with 35 points (9g-24a) in 36 games, despite spending the final six weeks of the season with Toronto of the American Hockey League. Duszak’s nine goals were fourth among rookie blueliners. Justin Brazeau of the Newfoundland Growlers led all ECHL rookies, and was tied for fifth overall in the league, with 27 goals in 57 games. Kristians Rubins who scored the first goal for the ECHL Newfoundland Growlers is now onto bigger and better things. The parent club of the Growlers the Toronto Maple Leafs have signed the defenceman to a two year entry level contract. …
The 2021 Canadian Brier isn’t until next March. However –there is one Newfoundland Curling who has his eyes on winning the Newfoundland Tankard and getting to the Brier. This comes about as Brad Gushue and his rink will be Team Canada atr next year’s Brier because they won the 2020 event. Well Greg Smith has his eyes now on trying to win the Tankard in this province and be the provincial rep at the Brier. So far he has two other members for his team Greg Blyde and Evan McDonah…
Tyler Boland of St. John’s won two major awards at the University of New Brunswick. Boland was named the Male Athlete of the year for U-N-B and also the MVP for the Hockey team for the past season. Boland, a third year student at UNB was the team’s top scorer with 20 goals and 28 assists for 48 points in 30 games and named to the 1st All Canadian all-star team. …
