GUSHUE WIN AGAIN

The Brad Gushue curling team captured a World Curling Tour championship at the “AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Classic” in Cornwall, Ontario with a 5-4 extra end victory over Glen Howard Sunday. Gushue with the hammer scored the single point in the extra end. Team Gushue went through the event undefeated with eight straight victories including a semi-final win over Brad Jacobs.…

            The St. John’s Senior Baseball semi-finals, both best of five, begin Tuesday night at St. Pats Ball Park. The opening game at six o clock will be the “A” series semi-final game between Shamrocks, who finished first in the league standings and fourth place Holy Cross. The first game of the “B” series between second place Roebothan, McKay and Marshall  Gonzaga Vikings and third place Feildians is scheduled to start at 8:15. WESTERN KINGS WIN IN OT

      Kyle Robinson’s goal at 4:44 of overtime lifted Western Kings to a 4-3 decision over St. John’s Privateers in Major Midget Triple AAA Hockey Saturday in Corner Brook. Jack Keough’s second goal of the game at 1:36 of the third period held up to force the game into the extra session. Adam Nolan had the other goal for the Privateers.       S A T U R D A Y  Bay Roberts Coors Light are on to the Intermediate Softball semi-finals. They defeated Game on Gear 10-2 on Saturday to take the best of three series two games to one. Chris Hussey strikes out ten as he picks up the victory. He allowed eight hits and didn’t walk a batter. Johnny Doyle hit a three run homer in this game for the winners. Shane Dobbin takes the loss. EAST-WEST HERDER FINAL

  The battle for the Herder Memorial Trophy, emblematic of provincial senior hockey championship will now involve teams from both the Provincial senior A League and the Avalon East Senior Hockey League. That decision to elevate the Avalon East Senior Hockey League to “A” status was made at the fall meeting of Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador in Gander this weekend.
