FITZPATRICK, NOEL PICKED IN NHL DRAFT

    Two Newfoundlanders who have played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League have been picked in this year’s National Hockey League Draft.   First of all Evan Fitzpatrick, a goaltender with Sherbrook was claimed 59th overall by the St. Louis Blues. The Blues were in the market for a netminder after trading goalie Brian Elliott to the Calgary Flames. Fitzpatrick was a member of the Sherbrooke Phoenix and played in 52 games and had a 3.42 goals against average.   And centerman Nathan Noel went in the fourth round and 113th overall to the Chicago Black Hawks. A  wild high scoring game in Corner Brook Senior Baseball League play Thursday night.   Veitch’s Hawks outscored Westside Monarchs 16-13 in a game that saw both teams combine for 28 hits as well.   Both teams had innings where they scored nine runs.                        C-B-S Storm claimed the St. John’s Men’s Fast Pitch Swing into Summer Softball tournament with a 9-7 win over Bay Roberts Coors Light.   Tournament Most Valuable Player Liam Myers pitched the win in the championship game.     Canada’s Olympic men’s rugby sevens dream was extinguished Sunday in a 14-12 loss to Russia in the quarter-finals of a last-ditch qualifying tournament. Trailing 14-7 late in the game, Canada had a chance to tie when Ciaran Hearn crashed over the line on the right flank leaving a tough conversion. Nathan Hirayama, one of the leading point-scorers on the World Series circuit, missed the kick and Russia coralled the ensuing kickoff, booting the ball into touch when the clock ran down to end the game.
