BREAKERS ON TO JR HOCKEY FINALS

    The Southern Shore Breakers won a real nail biter in the seventh game of the St Johns junior hockey semi-finals with Trinity Placentia Flyers Monday night. Justin David scored with 16 second left in the third period and Southern Shore Breakers edged Trinity Placentia Flyers 5-4 to advance to the St. John’s Junior Hockey League best of seven final series. Blake Dalton scored twice for the Shore with Shayne and Peter Kavanagh adding singles. Colin Jackson, Matt Hanson, Tyler Whittle and Dakota Warren had the Flyers goals. It was a thrilling end to the Central West Senior Hockey League best of seven final series. Mason Reid scored in overtime and the Clarenville Caribous edge the defending champions Cataracts 4-3 to earned a berth in the 2017 Herder Memorial Trophy final. The best of five series begins Saturday night in Harbour Grace with the East champions CeeBee Stars being the opponent for the Caribous.…

CENTRAL WEST HOCKEY HANDS OUT SUSPENSIONS

  The Central West Senior Hockey League championship game is set for Friday night in Grand Falls Windsor at the Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium. The defending champions Cataracts and the Clarenville Caribous meet at eight  o clock.. And with that game the Cataracts will not have head coach Tom Coolen on the bench and the Caribous will be without trainer Scott Maidment. Both were involved in what has been called a bottle throwing incident in game six in Clarenville.     Whoever wins the Central West title won’t have much time to celebrate. MIKES SQUIRES PASSES AWAY

The Sports Community in St. John’s and indeed the province are morning the sudden passing of Mike Squires. Squires was the man who established the Shamrocks Athletics Association which had senior hockey as well as junior hockey and minor hockey teams. His Shamrocks senior hockey team won the Herder Memorial Trophy in 1979. He also helped in the formation of the Shamrocks senior baseball team that hold the record for most championships by any baseball team. Squires was inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004. Squires was 73. He is resting at Cauls Funeral home.…

This past Sunday saw the running of The Outfitters 8th Annual St. Paddy’s Day 5km snowshoe race in the beautiful trails of Pippy Park in St John’s. Pat Collins (above) to the top spot with a incredible time of 19 min 48 secs.
