HYNES NAMED MVP OF TOURNAMENT

    Liam Hynes of the Southern Shore Breakers was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2017 Don Johnson Memorial Cup Junior B Hockey championships.   Hynes in the four round robin games had seven goals and eight assists for 15 points and was also the top scorer in the tournament.   Also three members of the Breakers were named to the all-star team.   Hynes was also named as a forward to the all-star team and was joined by forward Peter Kavanagh and defenseman Matthew Templeman…

BREAKERS 2-2 AT DON JOHNSON CUP

MOULTON WINS MUNDY POND 5K

      Levi Moulton won the Mundy Pond 5 Kilometre Road Race Sunday. It was a real battle with the top three finishers just nine seconds apart. Moulton finished the course in 16 minutes and 30 seconds. Mark Greene placed second just five seconds back at 16:35.   20 years of AHL hockey in St. John’s came to an end as the St. John’s IceCaps fell 2-1 to the Syracuse Crunch in overtime at the Onondaga County War Memorial Arena on Friday night.   Erik Condra potted a power play marker late in the first to give the Crunch the lead. ( Robert Goulding Photo)   The Grand Falls Windsor Cataracts have given Newfoundland its third Allan Cup in Allan Cup history.   The Cataracts defeated Lacombe Generals 7-4 in the championship game.   The Corner Brook Royals won the Allan Cup in 1986, the Clarenville Caribous won the top amateur prize in 2011.   Stuart McCrae led the Cataracts with a four point performance three goals and one assist. Collin Circelli also had four points with two goals and two assists. Matt Bragg and Matthew Stefanishion added singles.     …
