ICE CAPS FALL TO CRUNCH

  20 years of AHL hockey in St. John’s came to an end as the St. John’s IceCaps fell 2-1 to the Syracuse Crunch in overtime at the Onondaga County War Memorial Arena on Friday night.   Erik Condra potted a power play marker late in the first to give the Crunch the lead. After a scoreless second period, Stefan Matteau found the back of the net for the IceCaps on the power play to tie it up in the third. CATARACTS ALLAN CUP CHAMPIONS

           Luke Gallant hoists the Allan Cup. ( Robert Goulding Photo)   The Grand Falls Windsor Cataracts have given Newfoundland its third Allan Cup in Allan Cup history.   The Cataracts defeated Lacombe Generals 7-4 in the championship game.   The Corner Brook Royals won the Allan Cup in 1986, the Clarenville Caribous won the top amateur prize in 2011.   Stuart McCrae led the Cataracts with a four point performance three goals and one assist. FEWER WINS 5K RACE

  Colin Fewer was the first across the finish line in the Boston Pizza Flat out 5K road race Sunday. His winning time was 15 minutes and 17 seconds. Levi Moulton was second with 16:08 and Peter Bazeley place third in 16:35. Jennifer Murrin was the first female finisher with a time of 17 minutes and 50 seconds.   Charles Hudon scored twice for the St. John’s IceCaps but they fell  5-3 to the Toronto Marlies Friday night at Mile One Centre.   Toronto started the scoring with back-to-back first period markers from Steve Oleksy and Brendan Leipsic before the IceCaps’ Hudon scored his first of the evening on the power play, from Joel Hanley and Chris Terry.   The Marlies added another goal just 23 seconds into the middle frame, but the IceCaps battled back to tie it up with Hudon’s second of the night (unassisted), and a shorthanded tally from Jacob de la Rose (from Stefan…

ROYALS WIN WEST TITLE

    The Corner Brook Royals claimed the West Coast Senior Hockey League championship and the Cliff Gorman Memorial Trophy Friday night. The Royals defeated the Stephenville Jets 10-4 at the Dome in Stephenville. Daniel Whittle led the Royals with three goals and Johnny Jones and Tommy Ryan added two goals each. Nick Childs, Ryan MacMackin,  and Andrew Stagg had singles. Tim Caines scored twice for the Jets and Jordan Bennett and Mark McGuire had the other Jets goals .
