PURCELL GETS TRYOUT WITH BOSTON BRUINS

      St. John’s native Teddy Purcell has signed a professional tryout agreement with the Boston Bruins. This was confirmed on Thursday by team General Manager Don Sweeney   Purcell has played 12 years in the National Hockey League. He has played with Los Angeles, Tampa Bay, Edmonton and Florida.   Purcell had his best season in 2011-2012 with 24 goals and 41 assists for 65 points.  He has a career 101 goals and 206 assists for 307 points.   Michael Ryder of Bonavista played with the Bruins at one point in his career and also won a Stanley…

    The Men’s soccer team also coasted to two weekend victories. Sunday Memorial beat Mount A 8-0 with seven second half goals. Ranaldo Morris, Tyler Kirby, and Tyler Forsey had two goals each.     Hawks have taken a two games to none lead over Marlins in their Corner Brook senior baseball semi final series. The Hawks beat Marlins 11-3 scoring twice in the first adding four in the fifth and two in sixth and three in the seventh for the win.   Cory Lockyear pitches the win.         The Brad Gushue Curling rink claimed the Grand Slam of Curling Tour Challenge title Sunday as they beat Steffan Walstad of Norway 9-1 in the final game. That’s Grand Slam Title number eight for Gushue. Gushue lost this event 2 years ago but didn’t not compete last year because of injuries. The Gushue rink went undefeated.     Memorial University Sea Hawks women’s soccer team started its season off with two shutout wins. Saturday Memorial shutout Mount A 9-nothing. They scored six second half goals in this contest. Emily Bailey, Lauren Taylor and Nicole Torraville scored two goals each for Memorial. Sydney Walsh faced two shots on goal to record the shutout. In the second game Sunday Memorial scored three second half goals for a 3-nothing win. Jan Pope, Jessie Noseworthy and Teri Murphy scored for Memorial. TWO NFLDERS ON NAT SOFTBALL SQUAD

      Softball Canada has announced the list of athletes who have been selected to represent Canada next summer at the 2018 WBSC Junior Men’s Softball World Championship from July 7-15 in Prince Albert, Sask. The final roster has been determined following a Selection Camp held in O’Leary, P.E.I. in August following the completion of the U18 Men’s Canadian Championship.   Jordan Pomeroy of Placentia has been named to the team and Jordan Hamilton of Maddox Cove an alternate.   Pomeroy plays with the Chayne Bourras NL Selects in the St. John’s Intermediate Fastpitch softball league.
