LOCAL SOCCER PLAYER MAKING NAME IN AUSTRALIA

  Connie Lewis, a local senior ladies soccer player, is now lacing up her cleats with a team in Melbourne, Australia. Lewis  has had a goal in each of her first three games playing with Bayside United FC in the Women’s National Premier League (NPL). Its second tier to the W-league, which is the professional league. The team’s coach reached out to Connie’s agent to recruit her after seeing her video on a website.   The season runs from end of February to the end of September.…

HINKLE LEADS SCORING RACE

    Charles Hinkle of the St. John’s Edge is the leading scorer in the National Basketball League of Canada.   Hinkle has played in 35 games and has scored 728 points.   Teammate Carl English is third spot in the scoring race. He has 636 points in the 26 games he has appeared in.   St. John’s are in second place in their division with a 22-14 record while London is first with a 22-12 record this season.…

PRO HOCKEY RETURNS TO ST JOHN’S THIS FALL

  Professional hockey will be returning to St John’s this fall at Mile One. St. John’s will be joining the ECHL (formerly East Coast Hockey League) and will be ready this fall for the 2018-19 season.   The St. John’s Membership will be owned by Deacon Sports and Entertainment, an entity controlled by Dean MacDonald. Glenn Stanford, the long-time President of the City’s American Hockey League franchise, will oversee operations. The expansion team for St. John’s was approved by the ECHL board on March 13, 2018. ESCOTT NAMED CENTRAL WEST MVP

      The Central West Senior Hockey League handed out some of its season awards Saturday night in Gander.   Jordan Escott of the Gander Flyers was named the league’s most valuable player during the regular season.   Escott was also the top scorer in the league with 16 goals and 34 assists.   Ganders Rick Shephard was named coach of the year   Brad Power of the Flyers takes home the rookie of the year award.  …

  S A T U R D A Y    The Assente CBR Renegades got goals defeated te C ad W Offshore Breakers 5-1 in St. John’s Junior Hockey semi final play Saturday night.   Nick David, Blake Fudge, Tyler Wall, Dominic Nugent and Lucas Lush scored for the winners. Liam Hynes scored the lone goal for the Breakers. Goaltender Conor McCarthy made 33 for the Breakers while Shawn Hurley turned aside 23 shots in earning the win for the Renegades.
