The life, death and return of soccer on the Burin Peninsula.

November 4, 2024
Soccer/Sports Briefs

Photo by Jason Pike   By Jason Pike Burin, NL – Certain names are synonymous with soccer in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, none more so than the St Lawrence Laurentians. Once named the soccer capital of Canada for winning more titles than any other community in the country per capita. But those days are nothing more than dust and shadows now. It has been 8 years since the St Lawrence Laurentians challenge Cup squad has captured a provincial challenge Cup Championship, but even then the Laurentians weren’t truly a St Lawrence team.  It was more of a team…

Are we having fun yet?

November 4, 2024
Soccer/Sports Briefs/Uncategorized

By Jason Pike This past week the annual Beaconsfield junior varsity boys soccer started. I went out with the intent to do a few game reviews and take in some soccer. Last year, this event was split into Tier one and Tier 2, because, rightfully so, there is a huge gap in the quality and ability of a lot of the schools involved and when I say gap I don’t mean just a little bit. There is a massive difference from the top to the bottom in the standings of this league, so it caught me kind of off guard…

Will regionalization help soccer in NL

October 27, 2024
Press Box/Soccer/Sports Briefs

By Jason Pike St John’s, NL – In its time that the NLSA start regionalization teams and programs? To truly grow soccer the way it needs to here in this province more specifically here on the Avalon Peninsula should they perhaps adopt the same formula that hockey has which is pretty much you have to play within the region you live or where you go to school. This is done in youth hockey to prevent stacking teams or team jumping from region to region. Thus far it has damaged some programs that so much that now seem to cease to…

Hard road ahead for the Mobile Monarchs

Basketball/Press Box

By Jason Pike St John’s, NL – The Mobile Monarchs senior boys took on the St Kevin’s Mavericks senior B team on Monday night. And it was apparent right from the start that the monarchs are in for a very long season. Only 2 years ago the monarchs were AA senior Varsity Boys provincial champions but this team is a mere shadow of that squad. I’m trying to give them benefit of the doubt, being that it was the first game of the season, but what I witnessed was a severe lack of grassroots and fundamental basketball training. Kale Pittman…

When volunteers should move on

October 22, 2024
Basketball/Press Box/Sports Briefs

By Jason Pike Youth sports thrive on volunteers, that is no big secret, and in a lot of situations there wouldn’t be functioning organizations and teams without said volunteers. A lot of the times it consists of parents of children involved, or family members of those involved, that’s just a given and it is where organizations are able to draw from, but at what point do they or should they move on? I’m all about the Goodwill of volunteering and sticking around but when they stay running organizations for more than a decade after their kids have grown and moved…

SSNL needs to start ranking

Soccer/Sports Briefs

By Jason Pike ST. John’s, NL – Many years ago, when high school sports was called the Newfoundland High School athletics Association, the way schools competed were drafted out by the population of your school. Leap ahead several decades the name has changed but the structure has stayed the same! 1A through 4A still compete based on school size as they did from the very beginning, and yes, this is often the proper way to do things, because more students, gives you more players to choose from, and a greater chance of having the strongest team available to you.  But…
