Leah Rideout of Clarenville has been awarded a $500 Kenneth R. Stiles Memorial Scholarship from Hockey Canada. The scholarship is made possible through a joint participation of the Seaman Hotchkiss Hockey Foundation and Hockey Canada’s Officiating Program of Excellence. The Kenneth R. Good news if you are a St. John’s Edge basketball fan. The National Basketball League of Canada announces return to play in late December for the tenth milestone season. The Newfoundland Growlers are going to look a lot different next season. They have already lost Brady Ferguson who is going to play in Sweden. Now two more players are headed overseas. Marcus Power and Zach O’Brien both of St. John’s will be playing in Germany and have signed with Landshut of the German League. Power had 50 points last season good for fourth spot in team scoring and O’Brien was sixth with 46 points. …
Great news for two local hockey players. Alex Newhook of St. John’s and Dawson Mercer of Bay Roberts have been invited to Canada’s National Junior Team Summer Development camp. Some 41 players will be at this camp. …
