Rebuilding the Heart of Small-Town Sport

March 25, 2026
Features/Lifestyle/Press Box/Sports Briefs/Uncategorized

When the Culture Fades: Rebuilding the Heart of Small-Town Sport ST. LAWRENCE, NL – Sports dynasties are never meant to last forever. They rise, they dominate, and eventually they fade as generations change. That much is expected. What is far more troubling is not the loss of championships but the loss of the culture that made those championships possible in the first place.  I come from a small town that once lived and breathed soccer. With a population of roughly 1,200 people, we were known, proudly, as the soccer capital of Canada based on our success per-capital. Provincial banners, national…

SSNLs Inclusion Illusion

March 18, 2026
Press Box/Uncategorized

When Does SSNL Stop Talking and Start Changing? ST. JOHN’S, NL – Over the past several years, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing some truly special moments in high school sports across Newfoundland and Labrador. Basketball/Uncategorized

TWILLINGATE, NL – 2026 marked the culmination of a remarkable journey for the Saint Joseph’s Jaguars. For most of its history, Saint Joseph’s had never been known as a basketball powerhouse. That all changed in 2025, when, for the first time in school history, the Jaguars hosted and won the Provincial 1A Boys Basketball Championship in nothing short of storybook fashion. Trailing by 15 points, they stormed back to claim a dramatic two-point victory and make history. What made that championship run even more special was that the team lost no players afterward. At a school with only around twenty…
