Basketball/Sports Briefs

SSNL Basketball  needs rankings changes By Jason Pike Gross, disgusting and wrong are a few terms that come to mind as my jaw dropped reading the schedule for the SSNL Regional 1A qualifiers for the Avalon District this upcoming weekend.  The tournament consists of 4 teams. Dunne Memorial, St. Catherine’s, Baltimore, and St. Bons.  First, I have never agreed with St Bons being allowed to enter into the small school tournaments as they are not a part of NL schools and even more so, they are private school with the ability, if they chose, to create a super team. They…

By Jason Pike. Ferryland, NL – It’s time for another set of game reviews as a Senior B tournament hosted by Baltimore High School in Ferryland wraps up. Once again there were some points of contention early on in this tournament and the events were almost foreshadowed as weeks before I was informed that I was not allowed to record the games in the gym. This comes not long after…

Raising The Standard of Play

Medallist and the Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games.   “Grassroots need to be fostered” By Jason Pike St John’s, NL – I find myself in a lot of gymnasiums over the course of a year whether it be basketball or soccer and in the past a lot of softball and baseball. Its ofeten the same face kids in school play on multiple teams. Inevitable, as children age they let some sports go as the choose to focus on their dominant or preferred sport. It’s a fact of life  and often to the disappointment, and sometimes ire of some parents, who…

By Greg Locke ST JOHN’S, NL – St John’s is getting another semi-pro hockey. The former Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League’s Acadie-Bathurst Titan is to be relocated to St. John’s for the 2025-26 season and with a new name. In a news conference on Thursday the team announced that they will be called the Newfoundland Regiment in a tribute to the province’s military history and the famous Royal Newfoundland Regiment. Obviously the team has gotten the buy in from the Canadian Armed Forces and the Royal Newfoundland Regiment but the use of that name is bound to get some push…
