GROWLERS ON TO ECHL KELLY CUP FINAL

  The Newfoundland Growlers are Eastern Conference Champions after defeating the Flordia Everblades 3-0 at Mile One Centre on Saturday night.   The Growlers opened the scoring late in the second period as Scott Pooley backhanded in a rebound past Everblades goalie Callum Booth.   In a series where penalty’s and physical play were common place, game five was tame. NEWHOOK NAMED MOST VALUABLE PLAYER

  Its official. The Canadian Junior Hockey League has announced that St. John’s native Alex Newhook has been named the MVP for the league for the 2018-19 season. Newhook plays for the Victoria Grizzlies this past season and has 38 goals and 64 assists for 102 points to win the scoring title in the BCHL. \ Newhook will be playing with Boston College on the NCAA Division One on a scholarship this fall.…

DAVIES WINS HARBOUR FRONT 10K

  Andrew Davies won the Harbour Front 10K road race Sunday. He finished in a time of 32 minutes and 39 seconds. David Freak finished second in 33 minutes and 45 seconds. Third place went to Mark Greene in 34 minutes 34 minutes and 14 seconds.   Jennifer Murrin was the first female across the finish line in 35 minutes and 20 seconds. Melanie Van Soeran was second in 39 minutes and 21 seconds and Nicolle Hollohan placed third in 39 minutes and 49 seconds. 282 runners finished the race.  …

GROWLERS ONE WIN FROM TRIP TO ECHL FINAL

        The Growlers are one win away from a trip to the RCHL Kelly Cup finals.   The Growlers get three goals from Zack O’Brien and routed the Florida Everblades 6-nothing to take a three games to one lead in the best of seven series.   The Growlers tallied twice in the first and four times in the second.   Josh Kestner, Brady Ferguson and Giorgio Estephan had singles. Michael Garteig was in goal for the shutout. 4437 fans took in the game at Mile One. Game five set for Saturday night at seven at Mile One.…

    The St. John’s Junior Hockey League handed out its awards for the past season and three players from Mt Pearl Blades claimed awards.     The MVP and top point getter for the past season was Michael Broders from the Mt Pearl Blades. The top defenseman award went to James O’Brien also of the Blades and the top rookie for the past season was Jack Keough of the Blades.   The top goaltender award went to Josh Langmead of North East Eagles and The Most Gentlemanly and effective player award went to Ryan Dawson of C-B-N Stars.…
