The American Hockey League announced that St. John’s IceCaps forward Michael McCarron and defenceman Mark Barberio have been selected to play in the 2016 AHL All-Star Classic in Syracuse, NY.
McCarron, a first round pick of the Montreal Canadiens in 2013, has played in 31 of 33 games with the IceCaps this season. He leads the team in goals (13), and is second in points (25). The Macomb, Michigan native currently sits fourth in the American Hockey League rookie scoring race. The six-foot-six, 231-pounder was recalled to the Montreal Canadiens in December 2015, where he went scoreless in two games before returning to the IceCaps.
Barberio, currently on recall with the Montreal Canadiens, still leads all IceCaps blueliners with 20 points. Barberio was a sixth round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2008, and signed with Montreal in July 2015. The six-foot-one, 199-pound defenceman currently has 108 games NHL experience.
The 2016 AHL All-Star Classic takes place January 31-February 1 at the Onondaga County War Memorial Arena in Syracuse, N.Y.
