SSNL Outdoor Sports Season Comes to a Close

4 mins read

BURIN, NL -With the final whistle of the Boys 2A Soccer Provincials, the outdoor sports calendar for SSNL has officially wrapped up for the 2025 season. Between unpredictable weather and tight competition, it proved to be a loud, energetic, and hard-fought weekend — with the Burin Peninsula claiming two of the three provincial banners.

2A Boys Provincial Championship

The 2A Boys Provincials were hosted by Lakewood Academy of Glenwood, with all matches played on the brand-new Gander turf complex.

Participating teams included:

Lakewood Academy (Host)
St. Joseph’s Academy Jaguars (Lamaline)
St. Lawrence Academy Blues (Wild Card)
Gros Morne Academy (first-ever appearance)
Leo Burke Academy (Bishop’s Falls)
Belanger Memorial School (Codroy Valley)
Valmont Academy (King’s Point)
St. Bonaventure’s College (St. John’s)

Most of the teams at the top of their respective divisions were very evenly matched, setting up competitive semifinals.

Semifinal #1 – Lakewood Academy vs St. Bon’s

This game was a true back-and-forth battle. St. Bon’s showed strong experience and controlled much of the match, holding a 1–0 lead through the first half and deep into the second.

But Lakewood refused to quit.

The hosts tied the game just before full time, sending the match to double overtime, where it quickly became clear that Lakewood had the momentum and desire to finish the job. With less than a minute left in the second overtime period, Lakewood scored the winner, punching their ticket to the 2A Provincial Final.

Semifinal #2 – St. Joseph’s Academy vs St. Lawrence Academy

An all–Burin Peninsula showdown. St. Joseph’s had already defeated the Blues in regional s in a two-game total-goal series, and the storyline didn’t change much in this one. The Jaguars controlled the match from start to finish, earning their place in the championship game.

3A Boys Provincial Championship

The 3A Provincials were held in Marystown, again on Burin Peninsula turf.

Division 1:

Elwood High (Deer Lake)
Mealy Mountain Collegiate (Labrador)
Crescent Collegiate

Division 2:

Marystown Central High (Host)
Mobile Central High
Indian River High (Springdale)

From early on, it was clear that two teams were separating themselves:

Marystown Central High Clippers and Mealy Mountain Collegiate.

Both walked through their divisions and ultimately met in the 3A Championship Final, where Marystown took control and earned a convincing 3–0 victory, securing the provincial banner on home soil.

4A Boys Provincial Championship

The 4A championship was hosted in Corner Brook, with seven teams across two divisions.

Division A:

Corner Brook Regional High
Holy Heart of Mary (St. John’s)
Gander Collegiate

Division B:

Prince of Wales Collegiate (PWC)
Gonzaga High
O’Donel High
Exploits Valley High (the lone non–St. John’s school in the division)

Unfortunately, coverage for the 4A championship was very limited. Neither the host school nor SSNL provided complete updates on scores or standings.

What is confirmed, however, is that the Holy Heart Highlanders of St. John’s emerged as the 2025 4A Boys Provincial Champions, claiming what is widely considered the province’s most prestigious high school soccer title.
