MEN WIN, WOMEN LOSE IN AUS BASKETBALL

  The Men’s basketball team downed Cape Breton 88-73. Its the third win of the season for MUN and the sixth loss for Cape Breton in eight games. Daniel Gordon led Memorial with a 30 point performance in this contest. Austin Chambers added 13 for MUN. These teams play at one o clock Monday at the Field House.       Memorial Sea Hawks women’s basketball team fell to 5 wins and 4 losses as they fell 64-50 to Cape Breton who now have five wins and three losses. LOCAL HOCKEY STARTS UP FRIDAY

  The Christmas Break for the local hockey leagues ends this week. The East Coast, West Coast Coast and St John’s Junior Leagues resume play Friday night while the Central West League swings back into action Saturday night. There are two East Coast games Friday. St John’s Caps meet the CBR Blues at Twin Rinks while at the Jack Byrne Arena its Northeast Eagles and Southern Shore Breakers.     The Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Trials begins today at at Stride Place in Portage la Prairie, Man. DUNLAP NAMED COACH OF MONTH

    The National Basketball League of Canada has named  Jeff Dunlap of the St. John’s Edge as  coach of the month for the month of December. Coach Dunlap coached the Edge to a 5-2 record during December including winning the franchises first four games at home, where the team is currently undefeated.   The Edge take to Home Court for four games on January 9th and 10th against the Windsor Express and January 12th and 13th playing  the Kitchen Waterloo Titans.  …

PARADISE NATIVE ZACH ROSE LEADS CANADA TO GOLD

  18 year old Zach Rose of Paradise was spectacular in a 35-save performance, and Canada West beat the United States 5-1 on Saturday to win the gold medal at the 2017 World Junior A Challenge.   Rose – who was named tournament MVP following the game – was at his best in the final 40 minutes, making 14 saves in the second period and 12 more in the third to help the Canadians to the top of the podium.   It is the fifth gold for West – joining 2006, 2007, 2011 and 2015 – and the first time…

NFLDERS HIGH ON SOFTBALL CANADA TEAM LIST

  Softball Canada has announced the list of 43 athletes who have been named to the 2018 Men’s National Team Athlete Pool.  Ten of the athletes are from Newfoundland and Labrador. Although the team will not compete in any events in 2018, a development camp will take place this June in Ontario. The coaching staff will be scouting various club team events throughout 2018 ending with the Men’s Canadian Championship in St. Croix, Nova Scotia.
