Growing sport in Newfoundland.

With two climbing gyms now in St John’s competition climbing continues to grow in the province after years of it booming in other parts of Canada. With two gyms, Wallnuts Climbing Centre and
Cove Bouldering, they reach enough capacity to start a provincial sport organization, Climb NL, for climbing and send team to represent the province at regional and national event.

Up until recently Newfoundland climbers had to qualify for nationals competing in a province with a Climbing Escalade Canada (CEC)recognized provincial sports organization (PSO) such as the FQME in Quebec or OCF in Ontario. This required extensive travel. While they qualified for national competition in other provinces they could not represent that provice nor did they officially represent Newfoundland and Labrador because of the lack of a provincial sports organization here.

Now they can qualify at a provincial championship competition here or at a CEC regional qualifying championship event in eastern Canada and officially represent their province.
