Ice hockey under the lights

The Sports Community in St. John’s and indeed the province are morning the sudden passing of Mike Squires.

Squires was the man who established the Shamrocks Athletics Association which had senior hockey as well as junior hockey and minor hockey teams.

His Shamrocks senior hockey team won the Herder Memorial Trophy in 1979. He also helped in the formation of the Shamrocks senior baseball team that hold the record for most championships by any baseball team.

Squires was inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004.

Squires was 73. He is resting at Cauls Funeral home.
