Holy Cross wins double gold at soccer nationals
ST. JOHN’S, NL – Holy Cross dreamed of national gold, and on Monday they made those dreams come through not once, but twice, on home turf at historic King George V soccer pitch in St. John’s.
The women led things off with a 2-1 victory over 2024 champions CS Trident – Ouest de Quebec. Teri Murphy was named tournament MVP. Holy Cross Nutra Holdings had previously won Jubilee Trophy national gold in 2022 and 2023 and had 15 players from those campaigns in the lineup.
The men needed a penalty shootout to best defending champions Gloucester Celtic with the score knotted at 1-1 after regulation time. It was goalie Thomas Pieroway who secured the win, blocking one Gloucester shot and then netting his own to seal the gold medal. Harry Carter was named tournament MVP. The last time Holy Cross men won national gold was in 1988.
