EDGE GET 17TH WIN OF SEASON

The St. John’s Edge improved to 17-11 on the season Sunday with a 115-107 win over Windsor Express before 4549 fans at Mile One. The Edge trailed 58-54 at half time.

Glen Davis was the offensive leader with 32 points and Diego Kapelan backed him with 22.

The Edge go back at it Wednesday this time in Windsor against the Express who are 15-14 on the season.

The Edge beat Windsor 97-90 on Friday night.

Both these teams are in the NBL Central League. The Edge have a 16-11 record and are on a one game winning streak. The Express are 15-13 and on a one game losing streak.

The Edge are second overall in the LEAGUE standings. Moncton Magic are FIRST OVERALL  with an 18-9 record.

The St. John’s Edge faced the Windsor Express in a hard-fought battle on Friday night at Mile One Centre. The Edge battled all game to claim their first lead of the game late and would hold on for the 97-90 win in front of 4,151 fans.

In the early going Windsor showed why they are one of the highest scoring teams in the league. The Express got out to an early lead, scoring on their first five trips down the floor. The Edge would look to control the pace and flow of the game in the early going, scoring most of their points in the first on fast breaks. Some key stops down the stretch would keep the Edge within two, with Windsor leading 26-24 after 12 minutes.

Going into the second quarter the Edge were looking to keep their pace at a high level and win the battle on the boards. A 9-0 run by Windsor in the middle part of the quarter would once again force the Edge to have to dig out a hole. They would start making their way back on the strength of some solid inside play by Glen Davis who recorded 7 of his 17 points in the second quarter alone. The Edge would pull to within 11 points after and the game would remain that way for the final minute, sending it into the second half with the Edge trailing 49-38.

Coming out of the break the Edge were looking to get back into this one and send the fans home happy. Windsor had other ideas as they would tack onto their lead early. The key factor was that the Edge turnovers would always result in a Windsor basket and the Edge would have to find a way to limit the turnovers and capitalize on Windsor’s mistakes. The Edge would get a little spark from Isaiah Tate II, who would score five points in a row on his own to keep the team in this one. However, going into the fourth it was Windsor up 75-67.

The final quarter was filled with excitement and one of the best comebacks all season. The comeback started at the 8:40 mark after Glen Davis put a Windsor in a blender with his spin move to reduce the deficit to three, then on the next possession, Diego Kapelan would make no mistake from beyond the arc to tie this one up. With a little over two minutes remaining, Windsor would tie the game up on a triple from Tyrrel Tate, but then Dez Lee would hit back-to-back triples of his own to put the Edge in front by two possessions and they would hold that for the final two minutes taking this one by a score of 97-90.

St. John’s were led by Diego Kapelan offensively who dropped 21 points on 4-for-8 shooting from three-point range. Glen ‘Big Baby’ Davis continued to do his thing, scoring 17 points and pulling down 9 rebounds. Once again, Junior Cadougan kept up the solid play with 16 points and 10 boards for the double, while Dez Lee also notched a double-double on the night. The Edge also got a great game out of Isaiah Tate who dropped 13 points in the win.

Windsor were led by Chris Jones who scored 23 points in a losing cause.

These two teams will lock horns again on Sunday afternoon at Mile One Centre.
