Corner Brook Barons had a successful weekend at the 2nd annual Bluebird Investments Grand Falls Windsor Braves Female Classic.
The U12 AAA girls team had a perfect 4-0 round robin record setting up a rematch with St. John’s in the final with the Barons recording a 7-4 victory. Highlights for the Barons were Lauren Chaulk hitting an inside the park Home run. Moments after the Barons recorded a 6-4-3 double play. Katie Colbourne was the most sportsmanlike.
The Barons AA team also participated in the U12 tournament and although winless on the weekend represented the Barons proudly with an 8-8 tie and losing 2 games by 7-6 score boding very well for female baseball in the city. Emma Pitcher was the team’s most sportsmanlike player.
In the U14 division the GFW Braves defeated the Barons 2 games to 1 in the best of 3 mini series. The Braves won Game 1 by a score of 7 to 4. The Barons held and 8-4 lead late in Game 2 but could not hold down the Braves in the bottom of the last with GF scoring 5 times to steal the victory. In the 3rd and final game the Barons dug in for hard fought 8-6 victory with Megan Allen throwing 5 strong innings for the win and Olivia Porter picking up the save with 1 inning of relief. Katie Fisher had a 2 run single late in the game for the victors to seal the win. Emily White was the most sportsmanlike player for the Barons.
In the U16 division the Barons finished the round robin atop the standings with a 3-1 record followed by GFW at 2-2 and the Capitals at 1-3 in what was an extremely competitive division with many 1 run games. The Barons and Braves split the round robin with GF winning 18 to 10 and the Barons rebounding with a 8 to 7 victory setting up the rematch. Tied at 6 after 3 complete the Barons scored 3 times in the 5th for a 9 to 6 victory. Shontal Patey Callahan in relief pitched 4 solid innings of relief in front of a stingy Barons defense, surrendering 3 runs in her 1st inning before shutting the door for the final 3 innings. Megan King was the Barons most sportsmanlike player.
