Back-to-Back Titles for Saint Joseph’s

6 mins read

TWILLINGATE, NL – 2026 marked the culmination of a remarkable journey for the Saint Joseph’s Jaguars.

For most of its history, Saint Joseph’s had never been known as a basketball powerhouse. That all changed in 2025, when, for the first time in school history, the Jaguars hosted and won the Provincial 1A Boys Basketball Championship in nothing short of storybook fashion. Trailing by 15 points, they stormed back to claim a dramatic two-point victory and make history.

What made that championship run even more special was that the team lost no players afterward. At a school with only around twenty students from Grades 10 to 12, many teams would have been content to return the following season and defend their title in the same division.

But that was not the case.

Instead, Saint Joseph’s made the bold decision to move up to the far more competitive 2A Boys Basketball Provincials, hosted in Twillingate, Newfoundland, at J.M. Olds Collegiate.

It did not take long for the Jaguars to realize just how big the jump from 1A to 2A really was.

Their opening game against Copper Ridge Academy of Gros Morne did not unfold the way they had hoped. For most of the game, Saint Joseph’s found itself staring at a 20-point deficit. Yet in true Jaguars fashion, the underdogs refused to back down. In the fourth quarter, they mounted a stunning comeback, shocking the Coyotes and turning what looked like certain defeat into a convincing 12-point win.

Next came Piccadilly of Lourdes, a team that had suffered a heartbreaking blow the night before provincials when one of its top players went down with a broken leg. Unfortunately for Piccadilly, things did not improve from there, as the Jaguars made quick work of them and won by more than 30 points.

Then came a much tougher test.

The host team, J.M. Olds Collegiate, entered the tournament with plenty to prove. They had finished as provincial silver medallists the year before, falling short against Bay d’Espoir Academy, and now, with provincials on their home court, they were determined not to let another opportunity slip away.

They came out firing on all cylinders in a fast-paced, highly competitive match-up that felt more like a 4A showdown than a 2A game. The intensity never let up, and when regulation ended, the score was tied. The game had to be settled in overtime.

There, the Jaguars took control.

Saint Joseph’s silenced the hometown crowd and put away J.M. Olds, locking up first place in their division.

That set up a provincial semifinal against a familiar foe, the Baltimore Broncos. The two teams had history, including Saint Joseph’s dramatic two-point win over Baltimore in the 1A provincial championship the year before. Whenever these teams meet, there is never much love lost.

For much of the game, the semifinal remained competitive. But in the fourth quarter, the Jaguars pulled away, and the Broncos simply could not keep pace with the relentless Saint Joseph’s attack. With that, the Jaguars punched their ticket to the 2A provincial championship.

Waiting for them there was another old rival: the Lakewood Astras of Glenwood.

These two teams were no strangers to each other, having faced off multiple times in previous provincial finals—match-ups that had never ended well for the Jaguars.

This time, however, Saint Joseph’s was ready.

In one of the most competitive games imaginable, both teams pushed each other to the absolute limit. It was a back-and-forth battle for all four quarters, with neither side able to create much separation. Every possession mattered. Every basket mattered.

Then, in the final 45 seconds, the game changed.

Lakewood found itself in foul trouble and in the bonus, and that proved to be the turning point. Each time Lakewood fouled in an effort to stop the clock and regain possession, Saint Joseph’s was sent to the free-throw line for two shots. Time after time, the Jaguars delivered, calmly knocking down the most important free throws of their season.

Those clutch baskets sealed Lakewood’s fate.

With 45 seconds remaining, the Jaguars had stretched their lead to eight points, effectively putting the championship out of reach for Lakewood.

And so, for the second year in a row, the little team that could made history.

Saint Joseph’s captured the 2A Provincial Boys Basketball Championship, proving that last year’s title was no fluke and finishing their story in unforgettable fashion. With six players graduating this year, the Jaguars close the book on one of the greatest runs in school history—not just as champions, but as back-to-back champions in 2 divisions.
