Senior hockey in Newfoundland will look very different this year.

There will be seven teams playing in senior hockey but the East League will have five teams. St. John’s Caps, Southern Shore Breakers, CBS Blues, Northeast Eagles, Clarenville Caribous.

The Gander Flyers and Grand Falls Cataracts will compete as well but in interlocking. Teams from the east will play Gander and Grand Falls in interlocking games once in each others rinks.

Now the other change is with regard to the provincial championship and the Herder Memorial Trophy. This season’s Herder Memorial Championship will see four (4) NSHL teams qualify to participate in a round robin tournament, similar to the MasterCard Memorial Cup, with the winner being crowned the Herder Champion over the 2019 Easter weekend.

It should be pointed out that the Conception Bay CeeBee Stars will not be playing in senior hockey at all this year. Also there will be a west coast league with Corner Brook, Stephenville, Deer Lake and Port aux Basques. The West Coast League chose not to play for the Herder.
