The St. Lawrence Laurentians claimed their first provincial Challenge Cup Soccer title in three years Sunday with a 2-1 overtime win Mount Pearl.
St. Lawrence opened the scoring at the 43rd minute when Jordin Caines connected. That lasted until 20 minutes later when Mark Reddy tallied for the Mount Pearl squad.
The first overtime session settled nothing as the game remained tied at 1-all. Then the victory goal and the championship for St Lawrence when Brent Hennebury scored at the 103 minute mark of the contest.
John Douglas the goaltender for the Laurentians was named winner of the Gerard Quirke Memorial Trophy as the Most Valuable Player.
This year marked the 50th anniversary of the Challenge Cup and interesting note the Laurentians have won 25.
Now both these teams St Lawrence and Mount Pearl will be Newfoundland representatives at the Canadian Challenge Cup championships to be held in St. John’s starting October 5th.
