The Sports Page has learned that the City of St. John’s has been awarded the 2017 Canadian men’s Curling Championship—The Brier.
Sources tell the SportsPage that an announcement will be made in St. John’s within the next two weeks.
Local officials will not comment on the story only saying that the announcement will be made by Canadian Curling officials as to what bid has been successful.
St. John’s hosted the 1972 Brier at the Old Memorial Stadium.
Orest Meleschuk and his rink of Dave Romano, John Hanesiak and Pat Hailley claimed the championship.
Newfoundland’s only Brier win came in 1976 when Jack MacDuff, Toby MacDonald, Doug Hudson and Ken Templeton claimed the hardware.
