Canada Soccer Nationals – Day Four Roundup. ST JOHN’S, NL – Strong performances on the senior men’s and women’s sides have booked the Holy Cross entries a spot in two national championship finals on Monday. On the women’s side, Holy Cross Nutra Holdings defeated Victoria Gorge of British Columbia 3-1 to claim top spot in their group and advance to Monday’s Jubilee Trophy final.  Goals were scored by Jane Pope (x2) and Keisha Younge.  Holy Cross Nutra Holdings claimed the national title in 2022 and 2023.  They will play 2024 champions CS Trident – Ouest de Quebec 11:00 am Monday,…

By Jason Pike – Sports Correspondent.  This past weekend marked the culmination of the high school girls’ slo-pitch season in Newfoundland and Labrador, with 24 teams competing across the 2A, 3A, and 4A provincial championships held in three host communities. 2A Championship – Port Saunders Port Saunders played host to the 2A provincial tournament, welcoming eight schools from across the island. Division 1 included Canon Richards High, Baltimore High, Leo Burke Academy of Bishop’s Falls, and St. James All-Grade. Division 2 featured French Shore Academy, J.M. By Jason Pike With Newfoundland and Labrador’s population rising and falling over the past several decades, our high school sports system has had to evolve constantly. When dozens of small schools closed in the 1990s, the Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletics Federation — now known as School Sports NL — was forced to eliminate most of the 1A and 2A competitions. Larger consolidated schools meant higher enrolments, so everyone was pushed into the 3A or 4A tiers. But time has a way of reversing itself.   ST JOHN’S, NL –  St John’s QMJHL hockey team, The Regiment, has two young Newfoundlander on their roster for their inaugural season.  Sixteen year old Benjamin Veitch is from St John’s. Wears number 88 and plays centre. He was a first round draft pick by the Regiment.  Quinn Norman, number 91, is from Conception Bay South and was also a first round draft pick. He plays defence and fifteen years old.  The QMJHL (Quebec Major Junior Hockey League) is a youth league that spans eastern Canada.
