NFLDER NAMED BASEBALL PITCHING COACH IN US

A Mount Pearl native have been named a pitching coach with Bossier Parish County College baseball team.

Andrew Mercer begins his first season on coach Bobby Gilliam’s coaching staff. He will handle the Cavaliers pitching staff.

Mercer comes to BPCC after serving as an assistant coach for two seasons at Central Methodist University, a nationally-ranked NAIA school in Fayette, Missouri. While at CMU, the pitching staff was ranked 15th in the NAIA in team earned run average at 3.75, ninth in opponents batting average against at .233, third in strikeouts per nine innings at 8.96 and 25th in walks per game with 3.10. Peyton Long, one of the pitcher’s on the Eagles staff, was drafted in the 30th round by the Milwaukee Brewers. 

Prior to CMU, Mercer spent a season as an assistant with the 16U Ontario Blue Jays during the summer of 2017. He also spent two years as an instructor at the Kevin Brown Baseball School in Mt. Vernon, Ind.

A native of Mount Pearl, Newfoundland, Canada, Mercer graduated from the University of Southern Indiana after spending two years at Highland Community College in Kansas. At Southern Indiana he helped the Screaming Eagles to a 49-13 record and an NCAA Division II National Championship in 2014. During the season, he set a school’s single-season record for lowest ERA at 1.01. 

In addition to earning his bachelor’s degree from Southern Indiana, Mercer obtained a master’s degree from CMU.
