ST. JOHN’S, Newfoundland – Speaking at the Mount Pearl Chamber of Commerce today Newfoundland Growlers owner Dean MacDonald has confirmed that he will be building a new arena in Newfoundland and it will be outside of St John’s. “When you have nowhere to play you don’t get much choice,” said MacDonald.

“Economically, its better to build from scratch for us. Renovation on Mile One is an ongoing thing. Parking is an issue. Much of our fan base drive in from outside the city,” added MacDonald.

While this was happening a March 2021 document was leaked to local media regarding a workplace harassment investigation at the city owned St John’s Sports and Entertainment which manages the Mary Brown’s Centre, formerly Mile One Centre.

City lawyers promptly threatened media outlets with legal action if they printed or broadcast the details of that report.

Deacon Sports and Entertainment, parent company of the Growlers hockey team and The Edge basketball team and former tenants of Mile One Centre responded saying  DSE was not part of the March 2021 investigation. DSE was not provided a copy of the final report from the March 2021 investigation including the allegations or findings.
